Much of my work explores how to capture a sense of place through both words and images. Map illustration is perhaps the ultimate way of doing this. Here is my first attempt — an illustrated map of Ybor City to help folks navigate Hillsborough Community College’s one-day public art festival, Now on View.

I drew the buildings, trees, etc. by hand, scanned them, isolated each building in Photoshop, then used Illustrator’s image trace feature to vectorize them. From there, I was able to color and arrange the buildings into the digital map illustration below.

The final product was printed on a fan and incorporated into a printable festival guide that I wrote and laid out in InDesign.
